An interesting idea Jonny that could be very powerful. But while I can see it working quite well at first, I'm not convinced the interest will be sustained for that many years. Perhaps an alternative would be to do it on a smaller scale, with the torches moving every month or two over the next few years, but then returning to the original torch bearer?

My mum is going to be a torch bearer, so I thought I'd see what she though of the idea. This was her response:

'I agree with the first 2 paragraphs and for many of the torch bearers who weren't nominated ie celebrities and high earners in big companies, may be it is a good idea. I'm not sure it would be very successful though. Torches would get into the wrong hands and not be passed on and after a few years there would be less interest.
In my case, the torch will be a lasting material thing to remember the reason why I was nominated in future years when my life will undoubtably be very different. Meanwhile I will be sharing it locally with who ever wishes to see it close up. Four local schools and a children's club so far!'
